AIQI Member Spotlight - UKAS
About UKAS
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the UK’s national accreditation body, appointed by the government to assess and accredit organisations that provide certification, testing, verification, inspection, and calibration services. UKAS plays a critical role within the Quality Infrastructure (QI) ecosystem, ensuring the competence, impartiality, and reliability of conformity assessment bodies.
In the evolving landscape of AI assurance, UKAS accreditation supports the development of trustworthy, safe, and ethical AI technologies. By accrediting conformity assessment bodies that evaluate AI-driven systems, UKAS accreditation helps ensure trust and confidence in AI-based solutions.
UKAS’s Role in AI Assurance
As AI continues to transform industries and sectors, UKAS is committed to ensuring that AI assurance frameworks are robust, consistent, and fit for purpose. UKAS contributes to AI assurance through:
Accreditation of AI-related conformity assessment services – UKAS accreditation will ensure that organisations offering testing, inspection, and certification of AI-based technologies are competent, impartial, and effective.
Piloting AI certification schemes – Following the publication of ISO/IEC 42001 (Artificial Intelligence Management System Certification), UKAS is currently running a pilot programme to establish a structured and proportionate accreditation process for certification bodies assessing AI management systems.
Collaboration with stakeholders – UKAS works with conformity assessment bodies, government agencies, and other national accreditation bodies to develop reliable and internationally harmonised approaches to AI assurance.
UKAS accreditation provides a market-driven mechanism to support innovation while maintaining trust and confidence in AI applications.
UKAS is part of the AIQI Consortium to contribute its expertise in accreditation and support the development of quality infrastructure for AI assurance. Key reasons for UKAS's participation include:
Ensuring alignment between AI governance and quality infrastructure – By engaging in AIQI, UKAS helps shape best practices and ensures that AI assurance mechanisms are both effective and proportionate.
